Dieting Myths

There are an immense number of dieting programs and systems out there telling you how to lose weight. Most of them are inaccurate and some downright dangerous. Here are a few of the more popular myths associated with the slimming game. In practice they do not work.

LOW CARBS

You may have heard of these or even tried them yourself. The Atkins diet was one favourite not so long ago. Long term this type of diet does not work. It is much too strict, not sustainable and makes you feel bad. Lack of carbohydrates causes, headaches, irritability and loss of sleep. It also leads to halitosis. Often you will tend to gain weight after the initial weight loss.

LOW FAT DIETS

These are the so called 'low fat' items sold in everyone's supermarket. These foods are mostly full of calories and are more likely to make you gain weight than the reverse. Low fat foods do not necessarily mean you are going to lose weight.

STARVATION DIET

Trying to lose weight fast, by not eating, is plain stupid and can seriously injure your health. Your body needs nourishment to function properly. Your metabolic rate will slow right down and eventually grind to a halt, if you persist with starvation. You cannot stay healthy and lose weight at the same time by starvation.

PRE-PACKAGED DIET FOODS

Most pre-packaged food diets do not make sense. They are very expensive and are generally worse for you than foodstuffs that you can make in your own home. Avoid them like the plague.

In general you are going to be far better off exercising some degree of restraint in your level of intake. Also, using some commonsense in the selection of the sorts of food that you consume, would be a good idea. Lastly, take more exercise and get your metabolic rate on the increase. If you follow these simple rules you will lose weight.

Author is associated with two websites dealing with weight loss for the public at large.
